Are We Over-Therapying Our Kids?

As a parent, you’ll do anything to help your child thrive. That often means countless hours spent driving to therapy appointments, following strict dietary protocols, filling supplement drawers, and trying every program and protocol recommended by doctors, specialists, and even well-meaning friends.

But if you’ve ever felt like your child is stuck—or worse, regressing—despite doing “all the right things,” you’re not alone. Families in our practice often share the same heartbreaking story: the harder they push, the more overwhelmed their child becomes.

The truth is, sometimes the very therapies designed to help are actually working against each other.

When Too Much Becomes Too Much

We call this phenomenon Healing Interventions Overload.

It happens when a child’s nervous system—already stressed and dysregulated—is asked to handle multiple therapies, interventions, and protocols at the same time. While each therapy may be beneficial on its own, together they can overwhelm the system, canceling each other out and leaving your child exhausted, frustrated, and stuck.

Think of your child’s nervous system like a smartphone running on 5% battery. If you try to open every app at once, the phone freezes or crashes. The same thing happens in a nervous system that’s already operating in survival mode (fight-or-flight). Adding more therapy hours or supplements doesn’t recharge the battery—it drains it faster.

This is why so many kids battling developmental delays or chronic health challenges experience:

  • Meltdowns after therapy sessions
  • Regression in previously mastered skills
  • Sleep disruptions and gut challenges
  • Constant illness or immune struggles

It’s not that you’re missing something. It’s that your child’s nervous system is simply overwhelmed.

The Nervous System Comes First

At Foundations Chiropractic, we’ve seen it time and again: progress doesn’t truly take off until we first calm and restore the nervous system.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, it steals energy from other essential systems in predictable ways. We call this the Energy Theft Hierarchy:

  1. The Gut – Constipation, reflux, food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies
  2. Motor Development – Poor coordination, posture struggles, delayed milestones
  3. The Immune System – Frequent infections, chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions

No amount of supplements or therapy hours can fully override this pattern. True healing begins when the nervous system is restored to balance.

Why Sequencing Matters

It’s not about abandoning therapy. It’s about timing and sequence.

When families come to us, their kids are often enrolled in:

  • PT and OT several times a week
  • Speech and feeding therapy
  • Behavioral interventions or ABA
  • Sensory or listening programs
  • Primitive reflex and vision therapy
  • 10–40 supplements and specialized diets

All of these can help—if the foundation is set first. But if you try to teach calculus to a child who hasn’t yet mastered addition, it won’t stick. The same is true with therapies layered on top of an unregulated nervous system.

That’s why we follow a foundation-first approach:

  • Phase 1: Nervous System Restoration
Frequent neurologically-focused chiropractic adjustments to calm and regulate the system. Here, “less is more”—we often recommend pausing other therapies until the nervous system is ready.
  • Phase 2: Restoring Core Functions
Once the nervous system stabilizes, we see sleep improve, digestion normalize, immune function strengthen, and motor development pick up. These are the green lights that tell us the body is ready for more.
  • Phase 3: Optimization + Integration
With the nervous system and core functions stable, other therapies suddenly become far more effective. Instead of fighting against overload, they build on each other and accelerate progress.

Signs Your Child May Be Overloaded

Parents often know when “enough is enough.” Watch for these red flags:

  • Frequent meltdowns or shutdowns after sessions
  • Progress stalling across multiple therapies
  • Regression in skills your child had mastered
  • Therapists reporting decreased engagement
  • Sleep, digestion, or immune health worsening

If several of these are showing up at once, your child’s nervous system may be signaling that it’s maxed out.

A Simpler, Smarter Path Forward

The path to breakthrough isn’t always more. Sometimes it’s less—but in the right order.

At Foundations Chiropractic, we use advanced INSiGHT Scans to assess your child’s nervous system and create a step-by-step plan that builds the right foundation first. From there, every therapy, supplement, and lifestyle change works with your child’s system—not against it.

Your child is not broken. Their struggles make sense, and with the right sequence, they can heal and thrive.

If you’re ready to explore how a foundation-first, neurologically-focused approach could change your child’s story, we’d love to connect.
