The Gas Pedal and Brake Pedal
A simple way to understand the autonomic nervous system is to think of it as having a gas pedal and a brake pedal.
The sympathetic nervous system is the gas pedal. It helps the body respond to stress, danger, activity, and stimulation.
The parasympathetic nervous system is the brake pedal. It helps the body rest, digest, heal, calm, connect, and regulate.
Children need both.
They need the gas pedal to be alert, active, focused, and responsive.
They need the brake pedal to sleep, digest, recover, and regulate their emotions.
But many kids today are living with the gas pedal pressed down all day long.
Their bodies are constantly scanning for danger, even when they are safe.
That may look like:

Why Dysautonomia Is Often Missed
One of the hardest parts for parents is that dysautonomia can be invisible.
A child may look “fine” on the outside while feeling absolutely exhausted, overwhelmed, dizzy, anxious, or uncomfortable on the inside.
And because dysautonomia can affect so many different systems, families are often sent from one specialist to the next.
Digestive issues? Go to GI.
Heart racing or dizziness? Go to cardiology.

Signs of Dysautonomia in Kids and Teens
Dysautonomia can show up differently for every child, but some common signs include:

What Causes Dysautonomia?
At Foundations, we often describe dysautonomia through the lens of The Perfect Storm.
The Perfect Storm is the buildup of stressors that can begin early in life and overwhelm a child’s developing nervous system.
These stressors may include:
High stress during pregnancy
Birth trauma or birth interventions
C-section, vacuum, forceps, or induction
NICU time
Early antibiotic or medication exposure
Environmental stressors
Chronic illness
Emotional stress
Physical trauma
Toxic load
Ongoing sensory overload
For many kids, it is not one thing.
It is the stacking of many things over time.
Eventually, the nervous system gets stuck in survival mode.

The Role of the Vagus Nerve
One of the most important parts of the autonomic nervous system is the vagus nerve.
The vagus nerve begins near the brainstem and travels throughout the body, helping regulate the heart, lungs, digestive system, immune response, inflammation, and emotional regulation.
It plays a major role in the body’s ability to calm, connect, digest, heal, and recover.
When the vagus nerve is functioning well, the body has better access to the brake pedal.
But when the vagus nerve is stressed or underactive, kids can stay stuck in fight-or-flight or shutdown.
This is why dysautonomia can affect so many different areas of health.
It is not just about heart rate.
It is about the body’s ability to regulate from the inside out.
Why Birth Stress Matters
One of the most overlooked contributors to nervous system dysregulation is birth stress.
The upper neck, brainstem, and vagus nerve regions are especially important for autonomic regulation.
When a baby experiences physical stress during birth, such as a long labor, very fast labor, C-section, vacuum extraction, forceps, induction, or pulling and twisting, it can create tension and interference in the neurospinal system.
At Foundations, we call this neurological interference or subluxation.
Subluxation can disrupt communication between the brain and body and make it harder for the nervous system to regulate properly.
This does not mean parents did anything wrong.
It simply means the nervous system may need support.
What About POTS?
POTS, or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, is one type of dysautonomia.
It often involves a rapid increase in heart rate when standing, along with symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, brain fog, and sometimes fainting.
Many teens with POTS feel frustrated because they may look healthy, but daily life feels incredibly difficult.
Standing in line, taking a shower, going to school, playing sports, or even getting out of bed can feel overwhelming.
While POTS is one of the more commonly recognized forms of dysautonomia, it is only one piece of the larger dysautonomia conversation.
Many children have signs of autonomic dysregulation without ever receiving a formal POTS diagnosis.
Why Standard Testing May Not Tell the Whole Story
Many families are told, “Everything looks normal.”
But dysautonomia is often a functional nervous system issue.
That means it may not show up clearly on standard blood work, X-rays, or imaging.
Some children may receive tests like a tilt table test, active stand test, or autonomic function testing. These can be helpful, especially when POTS or fainting is involved.
But even when testing provides a diagnosis, many families are still left asking:
What caused this?
And:
What can we do to help the nervous system regulate better?
