Every time you turn on the news or scroll social media, it feels like there’s another headline about kids being sick. Recently, I came across an article titled “Record Surge of Infections in Children.” It was twelve pages long, packed with statistics and theories about why this is happening—especially after the last few years.
But here’s what bothered me: it didn’t actually tell parents what they could do about it. No game plan. No practical steps. No hope.
That’s where I want to do things differently.
This isn’t just about understanding why kids are getting sick so often—it’s about helping your family actually kick the sick, support your child’s immune system naturally, and stop living in constant fear of the next bug going around.
Why You Don’t Need to Live in Fear of Every Cough and Fever
When there’s “something going around,” most families brace themselves and hope they’re not next. In reality, when the whole community is dealing with immune challenges, it’s reasonable to expect that your family may be exposed at some point too.
The real question isn’t, “How do we avoid every germ forever?”
It’s, “How well is my child’s nervous system and immune system prepared to handle it?”
Over the last three to four years, kids have not had the same level of day-to-day exposure to germs they used to. Less school, fewer playdates, less community, more sanitizing. That reduced exposure means their immune systems haven’t had as much “practice.”
So now, when viruses like RSV, Influenza, Covid, Rhinovirus, or Croup come around, many kids’ bodies simply don’t recognize the “playbook” as well. They get overwhelmed more quickly, stay sick longer, and seem to catch everything.
But if your family is already doing things like:
-
Prioritizing real, whole foods
-
Moving your bodies and getting outside
-
Creating good sleep routines
-
Limiting toxins where you can
-
Getting regular neurologically-focused chiropractic adjustments
-
Staying connected with people and living life fully
…then you’re already doing a lot of the right things. You’re giving your child’s nervous system and immune system incredible tools to work with.
You don’t have to be afraid of every symptom. You can start to see them for what they often are: signs that the body is doing exactly what it is designed to do.
Expressive vs. Suppressive: How the Body Handles Being Sick
When your child’s body meets a bug, there are two big “directions” their immune response can head in: what we often call TH1 vs. TH2. To keep it simple, think of them as:
-
Expressive – the body shows you it’s working
-
Suppressive – the body is trying to push things down and keep going
Over the last several years (and honestly, even before that), our culture has leaned hard into suppressing symptoms:
-
More stress and less rest
-
Busy schedules with no real downtime
-
Quick fixes to cover up discomfort so we can keep going
When the immune system is constantly suppressed instead of supported, it doesn’t actually clear things out. Bugs linger. Inflammation builds. Issues become chronic, or when the body finally does push back, it can hit with a vengeance.
On the other hand, when a child’s nervous system is calm, coordinated, and well-regulated, their immune system can respond in a much more expressive and efficient way. That looks like:
-
A fever that spikes and then comes down appropriately
-
A runny nose that drains
-
A good cough that clears congestion
-
A kid who rests hard, sweats, sleeps, and then wakes up noticeably better
It may not be “pretty,” but it’s profoundly productive.
The things you’re already working on—nutrient-dense foods, strong sleep rhythms, getting outside, and consistent chiropractic adjustments—help your child’s nervous system stay in this expressive, adaptive mode so it can kick the sick faster and more completely.
What We See in the Office All the Time
We’ve seen this pattern play out over and over:
A kiddo gets picked up from school because they’re “not feeling well.” They’re warm to the touch. Their nose is starting to run. They’re extra tired and a little clingy.
Here’s what often happens next for families rooted in this different approach:
-
They come in for an adjustment so we can help calm and coordinate the nervous system.
-
They go home, drink plenty of water, eat simple, healthy foods.
-
Bedtime is moved up—screens off, lights lowered, snuggles in.
And then?
Twelve to twenty-four hours later, that child often wakes up dramatically better. Still maybe a bit tired, maybe still a slight cough or sniffle—but you can tell their body handled it instead of getting buried by it.
That’s the power of a nervous system that knows what to do and an immune system that’s allowed to actually express, instead of being constantly shut down.
You’re Not Helpless. You’re Equipped.
As parents, the hardest moments are when we feel helpless—when our kids are sick and we’re told to simply “wait and see” or bounce from one quick fix to the next.
But you are not helpless.
You are already making powerful choices every day that help your child:
-
Choosing sleep routines over late-night chaos
-
Offering real foods instead of ultra-processed snacks
-
Getting outside instead of always being inside
-
Saying yes to regular chiropractic care that supports the nervous system that runs the immune system
Our job at Foundations Chiropractic is to partner with you in that process—not just when your kids feel great, but especially when they’re under the weather.
That’s why when you bring your child in, we ask questions like:
-
Is it a wet or dry cough?
-
Are they more congested in their chest, nose, or ears?
-
How have they been sleeping?
-
How has their mood and behavior been leading up to this?
Those details help us understand what your child’s nervous system is doing and how to best support their body in working with the illness, not just against it.
Moving from Fear to Confidence
Yes, there are some really nasty bugs going around right now. Yes, the headlines can feel scary and overwhelming.
But here’s what I want you to hear:
👉 Your child’s body was designed to heal.
👉 Your nervous system-centered lifestyle is not just “nice”—it’s powerful.
👉 You are not at the mercy of every headline, every variant, and every season.
If you’re already part of our Foundations family, know this: the work you’re doing matters more than you may realize. The adjustments, the routines, the hard choices—they are putting your kids in a completely different category than what those articles are describing.
And if you’re reading this and don’t yet have a neurologically-focused pediatric chiropractor on your family’s team, this is your sign to make that connection. Reach out to our office at Foundations Chiropractic so we can take a deep look at your child’s nervous system with INSiGHT Scans and build a plan to help them truly kick the sick, not just get through it.
There may be a “record surge of infections” in the world right now—but your family doesn’t have to live in fear of it.
With a well-supported nervous system, a strong immune system, and a clear plan, your kids can handle what comes their way… and get back to doing what kids do best—growing, playing, and thriving.
