“My child just isn’t themselves… but no one can really tell me why.”
If you’ve ever had that thought — watching your child struggle with anxiety, meltdowns, sleep issues, tummy troubles, or constant overwhelm — you are not alone.
And you are not imagining it.
More and more parents today are noticing the same thing:
Their child is trying… but something just isn’t working the way it should.
At Foundations Chiropractic, we often find that these challenges are not random, and they are not separate issues.
They are connected.
And they often point back to one central system in the body:
The nervous system.
Why So Many Kids Feel Overwhelmed Today
Kids today are growing up in a very different world than even a generation ago.
From early on, their nervous systems are exposed to more stress than ever before:
Birth interventions
Environmental toxins
Processed foods
Screens and overstimulation
Busy, fast-paced schedules
Chronic immune and gut challenges
Over time, this can create a pattern where the nervous system becomes stuck in a constant state of stress.
Instead of feeling calm, adaptable, and regulated, the body begins operating in survival mode.
And when a child is in survival mode, everything else starts to feel harder.
What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?
Your child’s nervous system is responsible for regulating everything in their body.
That includes:
Sleep
Digestion
Immune function
Emotions
Focus
Behavior
Energy levels
At the center of this system is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which has two main branches:
The sympathetic nervous system — the gas pedal — responsible for fight-or-flight, stress, and alertness.
The parasympathetic nervous system — the brake pedal — responsible for rest, digestion, healing, and regulation.
In a healthy system, these two work together.
But in many kids today, that balance is off.
The gas pedal is stuck down…
And the brake pedal is not able to do its job.
This is what we call nervous system dysregulation.
How Dysregulation Shows Up in Kids
When the nervous system is stuck in stress mode, it doesn’t just affect one area.
It shows up everywhere.
You might see it physically:
Constant fatigue
Frequent headaches or stomachaches
Digestive issues like constipation or reflux
Difficulty falling or staying asleep
Frequent illness or slow recovery
Emotionally, it can look like:
Anxiety or constant worry
Mood swings
Big reactions to small situations
Low frustration tolerance
Frequent meltdowns
Behaviorally, you may notice:
Hyperactivity or restlessness
Trouble focusing
Difficulty sitting still
Avoidance of social situations
Aggression or defiance when overwhelmed
Cognitively, it can impact:
Focus and attention
Memory
Processing speed
Organization and follow-through
These are not separate problems.
They are different ways the body expresses the same underlying issue:
A nervous system that is overwhelmed and struggling to regulate.
The Perfect Storm Behind Dysregulation
At Foundations Chiropractic, we often explain this through something we call the Perfect Storm.
Most kids do not become dysregulated from one single event.
It is usually a buildup of stressors over time.
For many children, this starts before birth with prenatal stress.
Then birth itself can add another layer, especially when there is physical stress on the head, neck, and nervous system.
Then early childhood adds even more:
Illnesses
Antibiotics
Sensory overload
Environmental stress
Sleep challenges
Dietary stress
Over time, the nervous system becomes overwhelmed.
And instead of adapting smoothly, it gets stuck in protection mode.
The Vagus Nerve: Your Child’s “Calm Switch”
One of the most important pieces of this conversation is the vagus nerve.
This nerve is a major part of the parasympathetic system — your child’s ability to calm, regulate, and recover.
When the vagus nerve is functioning well, your child can:
Calm down after stress
Sleep more easily
Digest food properly
Handle emotions more smoothly
Connect socially
But when the vagus nerve is not functioning well, it becomes much harder for the body to shift out of stress mode.
That is when we see patterns like:
Chronic anxiety
Digestive issues
Sleep struggles
Emotional outbursts
Sensory overload
The body simply cannot “turn the volume down.”
Why So Many Diagnoses Overlap
Many parents are surprised to learn how often nervous system dysregulation is connected to common childhood diagnoses.
These may include:
ADHD
Anxiety
Autism spectrum challenges
Sensory processing difficulties
POTS
PANDAS
Chronic immune issues
These diagnoses are real.
But what often gets missed is that nervous system dysregulation can be a major underlying factor in all of them.
When the nervous system is supported and begins to regulate, many of these challenges can improve — not because we are treating the diagnosis directly, but because we are supporting the system that controls everything else.
What Helps (And Why It Sometimes Isn’t Enough)
Many families are already doing so many good things.
They’ve tried:
Better nutrition
Supplements
Reducing screen time
Creating routines
Therapies like OT, speech, or counseling
And these can absolutely help.
There are also simple tools that can support regulation in the moment, like:
Deep breathing
Cold water stimulation
Humming or singing
Calm, structured routines
Reducing sensory overload
But many parents notice something frustrating:
Things help… but they don’t fully last.
That’s because these strategies support the nervous system from the outside.
They help calm things down temporarily.
But they don’t always address the underlying stress patterns within the nervous system itself.
A Different Approach: Supporting the Nervous System First
At Foundations Chiropractic, we take a neurologically-focused approach.
Instead of chasing symptoms, we look at how the nervous system is functioning underneath everything.
We use INSiGHT Scans to measure patterns of stress, tension, and imbalance in the nervous system. These scans are non-invasive and help us understand how your child’s body is adapting to stress.
From there, we create a care plan focused on helping the nervous system:
Reduce stress
Improve regulation
Restore balance between the gas and brake systems
Support better communication between brain and body
Through gentle, specific care, the goal is not to “fix” your child.
It is to help their body function the way it was designed to.
What Happens When the Nervous System Begins to Regulate
When the nervous system starts to shift out of survival mode, we often see changes across many areas.
Sleep improves.
Meltdowns become less frequent.
Transitions get easier.
Digestion improves.
Focus increases.
Emotions become more manageable.
And one of the most meaningful changes parents report is this:
“My child finally seems like themselves again.”
There Is Hope
If your child is struggling and you feel like you have tried everything, you are not alone.
And more importantly, your child is not broken.
Their nervous system may simply be overwhelmed and asking for support.
At Foundations Chiropractic, we believe every child deserves to feel calm, connected, and capable in their body.
Because they were never meant to live in survival mode.
They were meant to thrive.
